Another Story Begins

Saturday, August 6 saw the wall raising for the Circle of Friends (CoF) home - another step forward for GAHH. This will be the future home of Alexandra James and her family.

Alexandra Speaks to the Volunteers

This home has many sponsors, but one of the primary sponsors is Wells Fargo and they turned out a large number of volunteers to participate in the ceremonies and then work throughout the day. Wells Fargo provided 15 or more volunteers and they were quickly assimilated into the many teams formed for the day’s work. There were also many other volunteers that worked among the teams.

The First Wall is Raised

Volunteers Hard at Work Building Walls

The job captains for the CoF home are Hence Williams and Dwayne Sheppard and they took it all in stride. The other SWAT members provided their usual excellent job of leadership and guidance.

The only draw back for the day was the summer heat. The temperatures were in the mid nineties and above. Even with the heat, volunteers were able to build most of the walls, stand them up, and do the final plumb on many of them. They were also able to put up some of the OSB nailers, put in the corner pieces of OSB, and finish putting up all of the OSB on the north wall. It was great day of building!

The Home At the End of Day One

The primary chores for the next work day will be to finish building the last walls, do final plumbing and straightening of the walls, put up the second top plates, and installing the post and beam structure on the front porch. If a sufficient number of volunteers are available we will also try to put up the OSB on the east wall and put up the scaffolding. We will be working toward being able to put up the trusses on Saturday, August 13.

This was the third home to be started this year and certainly will not be the last. The Women Build is still scheduled to start on September 17 and there is also another home to be started in November. It looks like there will be plenty of work for the rest of the year!
